Coverage in the Westfjords is uneven. Outside the village it can drop and come back when it feels like it. Most of the time that is fine, until you want to check which way to go or which number to call. That is why this guide can be saved to your phone. You download it once while you have internet, then open it whenever you like, including when your phone says there is no signal.
What is inside
The guide starts with what helps before you arrive. How to drive from Ísafjörður, how to pass the single-lane Vestfjarðagöng tunnel safely, and where to check the weather and road conditions. It carries the emergency number and the sources worth checking before you set out.
There are two maps. A contour map of Súgandafjörður with the six points from our leaflet, and a driving map from Ísafjörður. There is also a gallery of ten photographs from the area, each captioned with an Icelandic place name and coordinates, or with the Latin name of a plant.
How to take it with you
The guide page has a download button. One press saves the whole thing to your phone: the cover, the chapters, both maps and all the photographs, a little over a megabyte in total. The page shows the exact figure next to the button, because it grows with every new chapter. Do it while you still have a signal, ideally before you set off or while you are still in Ísafjörður.
We tested this on an ordinary phone. Once downloaded, the guide still opens when the phone has no connection.
The guide is not an app. There is nothing to install from a store, no account to create, and nothing collected about the reader. It is an ordinary web page that knows how to stay on your phone.
What is here, and what is coming
The guide is available in English, Icelandic and Polish. Each version downloads separately, so if you want two, download both.
The contents list six chapters. Two are open: “Before you arrive” and the gallery. The cover carries an introduction and a map of the fjord. More chapters will follow, and a guide already saved on your phone will offer to update itself the next time you are back in range.
Weather and road conditions change quickly. The guide points to the sources, but always check the current information with them before you travel.
